For over 25 years, the Charging Bull has stood alone at the center of the world’s financial capital as a symbol of Wall Street’s prosperity and power. But to some, the iconic New York statue also represents the aggressive atmosphere often associated with the male-dominated corporate world. Last week, on the eve of International Women’s Day, the Bull met its match: a small but fearless statue of a young girl, with her chin up and hands resolutely on her hips, staring down the gigantic bronze animal. The “Fearless Girl” statue, which aims to raise awareness about the benefits of having more women on corporate boards, embodies a sentiment that has gained renewed force in the current climate. Recent events remind us that the fight for equality is not over, but they also demonstrate the force of millions of voices speaking for women’s rights all around the world. And now, at the heart of Wall Street, stands a little bronze reminder that women are ready to take the bull by the horns and demand a seat at the corporate table. I was struggling to find the words to describe exactly how much the statue empowered me, but thankfully, the message written at the young girl’s feet says it all: “Know the power of women in leadership. SHE makes a difference.”
